English 2 - READING LOG ASSIGNMENT


Directions for reading response posts. Over the next six weeks as you read your individual novel, you will keep a log of your reading and your reactions to the novel. First, create your own wiki page within this site by clicking on your linked name below. Add the template to your page and type the title of the book in the space labeled for it. You need to post at least ten summary/responses about your novel in the next six weeks. The entries should be evenly dispersed across the six weeks of reading.


Follow this format for each log page entry (at least ten entries):

Summary: (Simply, briefly summarize the pages you read in summary paragraph form.) IVF starter stems: "In chapters 3-9 the main character...", "In these pages I read about..." (Write about 5 sentences.)

Response: (Write at least three sentences in which you share your thoughts, reactions, questions, and/or predictions about what you read.) Response stems: "After reading these pages I think...", "After reading chapters 5-15, I'm even more convinced that..." "It seems to me..." (This should be about 3 or more sentences.)

? Vocabulary: (List words (at least 1) from the reading that you don't know or words you especially like. Define these words, too.)
Eg. STALWART - (adj) strong and brave.

Criteria
Summary

Summaries of sections include literary elements of setting, character, conflict, theme, etc. and are concise and limited to important plot details.
Summaries of sections include references to literary or plot elements and are clear and include specific important plot details.
Summaries of sections don't refer to literary or plot elements and identify few or unimportant plot details or leaving gaps in the story line.
Summaries don't indicate a clear understanding of the plot of the story. No attempt is made to use literary vocabulary. Summary attempt is unsuccessful.
Reactions
Responses are clear, neat, regular, and thoughtful with unique and creative moments.
Each entry includes thoughtful questions or predictions.

Responses are clear and thoughtful included at least 5 total questions or predictions.
Responses are short and are not consistently thoughtfully.
Entries included fewer than 5 questions or predictions overall.

The reactions are limited to one or two words and tend toward the surface level.
Entries don’t include the questions or predictions assigned.

Q-words
Each entry has at least one Q-word and defines it.
Each entry has at least one Q-word and definition.
The majority of entries have at least one Q-word or doesn't define any.
Few Q-words are listed overall.
Peer responses
Student responded to each peer with a thoughtful comment and question.
Student responded to each peer with a thoughtful comment or question
Student responded to the majority of peers with a thoughtful comment and question.
Peer responses lack etiquette or evidence of thought.


Quarter 3 Assignment: Note five passages or direct quotations in your novel that hold extra meaning for you. Put those on your page and share why you selected each one. Read the quotations/explanations that your partner listed and respond to his or her writing.
